A Stir of Echoes CustomerReview
I’d only read I Am Legend by Matheson so I didn’t really know what to expect. What I found out pretty quickly is that this short, quick read is a little slow at first but then begins to pick up in intensity as Tom’s unwanted “powers” begin to form and take shape. What was starting to become and okay read turned out to be a pretty good book by the end.
The implications behind the powers that Tom began to have is pretty scary. At first it would seem cool to be able to read people’s thoughts, but after a while it would become tiresome and downright scary. This is exactly what Matheson showed in A Stir of Echoes as Tom soon finds out that people’s thoughts can be scary. I know I would want people poking around in my thoughts for sheer privacy alone, but what if someone could know what I was thinking?
In some cases, invariably, it would be not a bad thing but turn out to be good as Matheson uses the babysitter as an example. If he hadn’t of known what the babysitter was up to, or at least known the general feel of her thoughts, then he may very well would have had a kidnapped son or, even worse, a dead son. The other struggle Matheson shows well is Tom’s fight against it and its resulting side effects and eventually coming to acknowledge and accept his burgeoning powers so that it works with him and not against him.
Ultimately Matheson made a poignant story that the reader can relate to. So far I’ve enjoyed both books that I have read by Matheson, so I can only expect good from him in future books of his that I read. I would recommend the author and the book.
4 stars.
